Who runs different elections?

The election authority depends on the office being elected. A municipal election and a Lok Sabha election are not administered through one interchangeable system.

Before looking for an election date, a voter-roll correction or a complaint route, identify the election. “The Election Commission” can be too vague to tell you which institution is responsible.

ECI and State Election Commissions have different remits

Article 324 places elections to Parliament, state legislatures and the offices of President and Vice-President within the Election Commission of India’s constitutional remit. The fact that an Assembly election happens inside a state does not make it a State Election Commission election. 1

Articles 243K and 243ZA provide for State Election Commissions in relation to panchayat and municipal elections. A State Election Commission is a separate constitutional authority for this purpose, not merely a different name for ECI’s operations in that state. Applicable state laws and special local arrangements still need attention. 2

The first distinction is therefore the office, not the size of the place where voting occurs. A local resident can be affected by both systems at different elections.

Do not transfer instructions between elections

Hypothetical example: someone shares a municipal-election notice and says the same deadline applies to a Lok Sabha electoral-roll correction. The notice may be authentic and still be the wrong instruction for that task. Check the issuing authority, election, area and purpose before following it.

The same problem can occur with a polling-date graphic from an earlier election, a ward number that has changed, or a form copied from another state. An official-looking document is not enough; it has to apply to the actual election and person concerned.

A practical verification note should identify the state or Union Territory, elected body, constituency or ward, current notification and issuing authority. Add the notice date and any later corrigendum. Treat a screenshot with no searchable document number as a lead rather than the final source.

Match the complaint to the problem

A problem in a voter list, a suspected campaign violation, an inaccessible polling arrangement and a challenge to an election result are different matters. Do not assume one feedback form is the legally correct route for all four.

Start with the responsible election authority’s current guidance for the specific problem. Record the designated recipient and submission requirements. Keep factual evidence, but do not publicly expose someone’s voter identification details or publish an unverified accusation as proof of misconduct.

This page intentionally does not provide a universal deadline or promise a single complaint route. Such details must come from the current notice and applicable procedure. The national constitutional map tells you where to begin; it does not replace election-specific instructions. 1 2

Use this distinction to question responsibility

Ask a clear question: “Which authority issued the notification for this election, and where is the current instruction for this issue?” This is more useful than sending the same complaint indiscriminately to every body with “election” in its name.

When sharing an answer, include enough context for another reader to see that it applies to their election. A verified instruction for one place should not become a nationwide claim by losing its caption.
